There’s No Good Reason Not to Have a Website.

Yep, it still happens … a lot! A business with no website (*sigh*). We still hear the same lame excuses for not having one. It could make one weary if you let it. It’s the old adage, “You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink.” Amen! Alas, our mentality is simply to say, “Next …” and move on down the line because there’s no good reason not to have a website in today’s market. Guess, they’re just waiting to hear from us to make the leap. ;)

If you’re a small business owner and still haven’t made the jump, here are several things to keep in mind:

  • People do look to see if you have a website.
  • People expect and value your business having an online presence and without one potential opportunity is lost.
  • Just because your office doesn’t have a computer or internet connection, doesn’t mean you don’t need a website.
  • Your friend, brother-in-law, child, or customer may be able to create a website for you; however, in most cases they never get around to it or if so, many times it’s a poor representation for your business.
  • You don’t have to spend a small fortune for a functional, beneficial and attractive website.
  • No, having a Facebook page is not the same as having your own website.
  • Even if you’re a contractor or do government contracting, you should still have a site.
  • People don’t remember phone numbers anymore; they remember web addresses.
  • People do judge you if you don’t have a site. Your legitimacy is in question without one and you’re definitely judged poorly if you have a dated or amiturish one; you’re better off having no site at all at that point.
  • Bottom line … you’re missing business if you’re not on board with a website.

OK then … a website it is! Ahhh, don’t you feel better?! :)

Now what??

Just do your homework, talk with other business owners who have nice sites, get referrals or better yet, just call WebsitesGiveBack! You’ll be so glad you did!

Website Design Dust Has Settled.

Similar to the breakup of Ma Bell when there was a flurry of activity, yet mostly confusion, as to which phone company to go to – what plan was best – and what cost the lowest; small business has witnessed the same with the website design industry. Eventually though, all dust settles.

Small business continues to be bombarded with borderline harassing calls about getting a website. They been sold and told so many things they can’t keep up with any of them. So many oversell and under-deliver and charge a small fortune. What we struggle with as a website design company is believability and questioned credibility. Many do not believe that we can deliver what we say and at the affordable cost we offer simply because – they are jaded. We empathize greatly and really, who can blame them.

Let’s be very clear and very truthful, if someone is calling hounding you about being on the “front page of Google” and heck, you can even a “free” website; you either need to run or take out a loan. Always keep in mind that you are one of countless companies in your area alone, wanting the same spot and there are only 20 openings on the first page of Google. As Linda always says, “It’s the whole filling a thimble with a fire hose” analogy. Google’s algorithms are constantly in flux and no one, if being honest, can guarantee this.

I’m candid with my clients who ask about this and we do our very best to stay on top of trends, as well as the latest scams and abuses. We are not, and never claim to be, a SEO company. We do however perform many SEO functions as part of our website package; which are extremely beneficial to our clients without huge costs associated with them. We go above and beyond. Don’t Miss Opportunity – Be a Business that Gets It!

I like decision makers – I like movers and shakers – a “man with a plan” – those who know what they want! Heck, I gravitate towards the successful because I admire them and I want to be successful. Successful people don’t put up obstacles, make excuses or wait too long to make a decision; knowing they might just miss an opportunity if so.

So … with this in mind, I’m baffled that a small business today doesn’t “get it” that they have to have a website. There are so many excuses businesses give for not having a website from the typical – to the lame – to the flat out bizarre (did you really just say that?!)

“Lack of funds” being one of the typical ones,  is understandable … to a point. However, a website for your business isn’t a luxury or an extra, it’s a necessity to compete in today’s arena! And it’s because we truly understand this that WebsitesGiveBack is the smartest choice for your small business. You need a website, but you don’t need to go in debt or go  broke getting one. Our pricing is so reasonable and fair and how we treat and value you as our client is simply exceptional. In most cases, one (just one!) customer or client who comes to you from your website pays for the entire site, and many times the renewal too! Easily stated, it’s smart business.

What Does a Baby Star and Website Design Have in Common?

fbsideMar2012WebsitesGiveBack has been in business just about 4 years now. It’s been an interesting road and one that continues to have many twists and turns. When our other business, a publishing company – publishers of Nana Star & Friends, abruptly came to a halt in 2009, we had to start over … literally. This time however, there was no start-up money, seed money or savings to help the transition. We had to take what we had, which was a computer, a telephone and our skills and make something of it. Having a publishing company taught us a lot about marketing, sales and yes, website design. You could have paid me a lot of money however and never would I have believed today we would have a website company – let alone one that has sustained 4 years and counting. The biggest misconception starting another business was that it would be easy because “heck I’ve done this before; I started from scratch!” Ah … but this … THIS was a whole new ballgame with new rules, new everything. Whew! It’s been quite the journey. There’s a lot to explore and write about here; however, what lead me to write this post and what I want to focus on,  is one key thing … PASSION.

I was passionate (insanely so) about writing children’s books, creating toys and having a powerful, positive message for children and that passion definitely fueled me. I’ve been in sales all my life and everything from cosmetics – to encyclopedias (I hear the laughter Winking smile) – to security alarms – to children’s books and now to websites, I’ve ALWAYS passionately believed in! They say a good salesperson “can sell anything”. I disagree. If you’re selling something you don’t believe in, that you’re not passionate about, then I think that just makes you slick and disconnected. There’s a definite amount of conscience that applies in sales.

A question examined was, “How could we transition our passion for Nana Star to passion for websites?” It’s not so much passion for actual websites, as it is passion to help small businesses. We offer something no one else does at a very affordable cost. We’re not trying to bleed small business or take them for what we can get. We absolutely know the struggles small business face today and in this economy. WGB is trying to help them get a necessary and vital presence on the internet, giving them the most value and quality at a nominal cost. We don’t throw something together and call it a day. We care about each client, each business, and it shows. We may build websites; however, our greater creation is building relationships.

Do Nothing Half-Adz.

half assed

The term “half-assed” has an interesting history that’s rather amusing. “Half-assed” originated from “half-adz.” An adz is a tool with a curved, axe-type blade used for shaping wood. If you were wealthy and wanted a new fireplace, the mantle could be shaped using an adz to finish both the front and back. However, the back of the mantle isn’t visible. If you wanted to save money you could have only the front of the mantle shaped and leave the back as the rough, unfinished wood. Since there was less labor, this cheaper job was a “half-adz” job. This “half-adz” woodworking term has evolved into today’s “half-assed”, and now means minimal effort was expended to accomplish the task. Who knew? We’re all the better for knowing that eh?!

Do nothing half-assed, half-adz, half-way, half-arsed (for my British friends), half-whatever! Another one of my favorites, is the reference to being “not hot or cold, but being lukewarm” (Rev. 3:16).  Blah! Yucky! Phooey! To not live lukewarm is how I try very much to live my life. (It also comes with a slightly manic personality like mine (yes, I know, it explains a lot)). And for me that isn’t confined to one aspect of life, it’s across-the-board.

Two Ears and One Mouth.

We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak. Epictetus

Talking more than listening in sales says …

I know better than you.

What you say really doesn’t matter.

It’s really all about me.

I’m more interesting than you.

Bottom line, I just want to make the sale.

Listening more than talking in sales says …

You know what you need more than I do.

What you say matters.

You’re important and I value you.

Let’s focus on your needs and nothing else.

Bottom line, I want to make the sale if it’s a fit for you.

We’ve done a lot more listening than talking lately and we’ve learned a lot. We’ve heard what customers want and what they don’t want or need right now. We’ve made some significant changes based on simply listening that both benefit small business and us as company. We’re still doing website design and we’ve now expanded to doing custom motion graphic videos for both websites and any online line and social media marketing. We’ll share more about this expansion in the next blog post. We know it’s been awhile and we appreciate if you’re still with us! Smile

Wishing you a happy Monday and a fantastic, productive week!

Many a man would rather you heard his story than granted his request. — Phillip Stanhope Earl of Chesterfield

Today We Eat Steak!

I Feel Like a Steak!

Yes today,  I feel like a steak. No, I don’t actually feel like a steak, but I’d like to eat one! OK, so today I’d like to eat a steak! Gosh, I need to explain. I live in rather a small town and if something new pops up, well, everyone wants to know about it and I’m no exception. Recently, in the local paper was a full page color ad for a new restaurant, Joe’s Steakhouse. Wow! Now I do recall a place being renovated on my weekend jaunts to feed lonely horses with my sweet one and it’s but a country mile from my home … who knew! I had to check to see if they had a website (if not, I’d be all over it of course) and they do and it’s nice and welcoming. I think I’m going to like Joe’s.

No, I Don’t Know Them and I’m Not Looking for a Free Meal.

Now I swear these people don’t have a clue  I even exist and I’m not plugging them for a free meal. I can’t give a food review and why would anyone care because most who would read this are quite a good distance. (I don’t think Front Royal is on anyone’s bucket list. Too bad for them.) The only review I can give is what the inside looks like (from their website) and well … its “steakhouse-ish”. It’s a definite goal on my list; a future reward. The point to all this is, I love a good story and every small business has one. I love Joe’s story … it’s short, sweet, and it’s inspiring. I won’t spoil it you’ll have to read it.

Long Spoons

long spoons

Upon his death a man was given a tour of both heaven and hell, so he could select his final destination. First he was taken to hell. He saw a lot of people sitting at a long banquet table loaded with all kinds of delicious food. However, he noticed that all the people seated were unhappy, and looked frustrated. They each had a fork strapped to the left arm and a knife strapped to the right arm – they had no elbows. Each had a four-foot handle which made it impossible for them to eat. With all kinds of good in front of them they were not able to taste any of it. After this scene in hell he was taken on a tour of heaven. He noticed that the people in heaven were also seated at a long banquet table loaded with all kinds of delicious good. There was a difference here because he noticed that the people here were cheerful and enjoying themselves. They also had forks and knives with a four-foot handle – they had no elbows. They were busy eating because they were feeding each other. Each person in heaven was feeding the one across the table from him and was being fed in return. The people in hell were unable to eat because they were trying to feed only themselves.

This is one of my all time favorite stories. There are different versions of titled, “Long Spoons” which are so worth looking up; as many give greater, more elaborate details – making it even more profound and beautiful.

Some Days a Diamond, Some Days are Stone.

Some days are diamonds, some days are stone
Some time the hard times won’t leave me alone
Some times the cold winds blow a chill in my bones
Some days are diamonds, some days are stone.

Words/music by Dick Feller Sung by John Denver

Diamond? Stone?

My body clock decides to not work and I’m late, which means my child is rushing too. The day starts off well … not very sparkly.

Diamond: I keep my attitude in check making a conscious effort to be in the moment and happy for and with my child.

Stone: I get frustrated and take it out on my child blaming everyone and everything.

I choose a diamond day!

A client I had hoped would close on a website has decided against it.

Diamond: I sincerely wish them luck; leaving the door open if things change or for future referrals.

Stone: I am rude; taking their decision personally.

I choose a diamond day! Continue reading

You’re Dead to Me … (if you don’t have a website).

Fredo, you’re nothing to me now. You’re not a brother, you’re not a friend. I don’t want to know you or what you do. I don’t want to see you at the hotels, I don’t want you near my house. When you see our mother, I want to know a day in advance, so I won’t be there. You understand? “ (by Michael Corleone) Basically … You’re dead to me.

I so get this. Ok, so I’m part Italian, though I feel that dominates my entire personality at times, and anyone who knows me knows that when I’m done, I’m done and basically … “you’re dead to me”. It’s just part of my make up. But heck …

I’m Not the Only One Who Feels That Way.

Let me tell you … if you’re a small business and you don’t have a website; you’re dead to a lot more folks than just me. They may not utter the exact words “you’re dead to me”, but they very well may use the word, “Next!” If you’re a plumber, roofer, electrician or any business in the trades and someone is looking up your services and all that comes up is an online listing with just your name and a phone number, then you can pretty much be sure you are missing business … period. Is Your Website Relationship Like a Sad Country Song?

Baby, baby

Alright, I’m showing my age here. The Muppets must have had a lot of clout (or it is “klout“>) taking big stars of the day like Mac Davis and making them wear outfits like this! Nice look there Mac! Winking smile

Baby, baby don’t get hooked on me.
‘Cause I’ll just use you then I’ll set you free.
Girl don’t let your life get tangled up with mine,
’cause I’ll just leave you, I can’t take no clinging vine.

Ah bliss, you’ve just signed (your life away) a contract for a new website for your small business and you’re on top of the world. It’s like a new love and your giddy with delight! You feel like one heck of a hottie because for weeks you were pursued and wooed and oh the time and attention you were given! You finally took the leap, hitched a ride to their star and you’re off on a new adventure sailing unchartered waters(get a lifejacket!). You’re so smitten with your webmaster!

Obsessive. Suspicious.

A few days go by and your gathering necessary information to pass along, but you notice something’s a bit different; you’re phone isn’t ringing as much. Hmm … You find yourself constantly checking your email and messages being even more obsessive than usual. You dial their number and hang up a few times before you actually let it go through. There’s a bit of a role reversal occurring and it makes you slightly uneasy. Soon you realize you’re making all the calls and you never speak to the original pursuer again because they’re never available or your told they’ll “call you back”. You start feeling insecure, even jealous, wondering if you’re not the apple of their eye after all.

Why Kiss a Frog When You Can Kiss a Moose Instead?!

Kissing a Frog.

So do you really have to “kiss a few frogs to find a prince?” What if the frog never turns into your prince? How disappointing ey? Then I ask, why just kiss a frog when you can kiss a moose instead?! That’s right, do something totally unexpected! (Hmm … while on the topic of frogs and princes, check out Lori Gosselin’s latest post, Do You Believe in Happily Ever After? – you’ll love it!)

Kissing a Moose.

I have an affinity towards moose for some reason. I have about a dozen moose ornaments from Lenox I’ve collected over the years and love bringing them out each Christmas. So naturally I melted when I saw this photo and I knew there was a blog post just waiting to be written. (Actually my mother sent this to me and said, “Any blog possibilities?” Ah, she knows me well!) Winking smile

“Kissed by a Wild Moose” (aren’t all moose wild?!). Stands 6′ 1″ at 250 lbs. I want one!!! Continue reading

“Why Go Out for Hamburger When You Have Steak at Home?”

The Best Compliment!

“Why go out for hamburger when you have steak at home?” This is a wonderful statement Paul Newmanmade about his beloved wife Joanne Woodward and what a beautiful sentiment. Wouldn’t we all looove to hear that said about us!

Being a Steak in Love.

In love, being the steak at home takes devotion, respect, loyalty and honesty. We must give more them more than what the outside world has to offer. Care  more about ourselves and give our best. We must love fiercely; be memorable and make our other half the center of our world. Being steak mean you go out of your way to let your love know you care and how much they mean to you in little and big ways.  Most important, let hem know you want them and need them. You Gotta Play to Win!

powerballIn the game of life, you gotta play to win.

In love, you gotta expose your heart and love big to win.

In business, you gotta focus on those customers and gain their loyalty to win.

As an entrepreneur, you need to put your own skin in the game to win.

In sales, you gotta makes those calls and call backs to win.

If you don’t play, you don’t win. Period.

And don’t forget, playing involves risk. Period.

Quotes on Risk-Taking:

“The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn and feel and change and grow and love and live.”Leo F. Buscaglia

“Often the difference between a successful person and a failure is not one has better abilities or ideas, but the courage that one has to bet on one’s ideas, to take a calculated risk – and to act.” Andre Malraux Continue reading
