Some Days a Diamond, Some Days are Stone.

Some days are diamonds, some days are
Some time the hard times won’t leave me alone
Some times the cold winds blow a chill in my bones
Some days are diamonds, some days are stone.

Words/music by Dick Feller Sung by John Denver

Diamond? Stone?

My body clock decides to not work and I’m late, which means my child is rushing too. The day starts off well … not very sparkly.

Diamond: I keep my attitude in check making a conscious effort to be in the moment and happy for and with my child.

Stone: I get frustrated and take it out on my child blaming everyone and everything.

I choose a diamond day!

A client I had hoped would close on a website has decided against it.

Diamond: I sincerely wish them luck; leaving the door open if things change or for future referrals.

Stone: I am rude; taking their decision personally.

I choose a diamond day!

A plumber hangs up on me. An electrician laughs and says he can find a website “cheaper”. A roofer tells me he hates “solicitors”.

Diamond: I dial another . I wish the electrician good luck. I thank the roofer for his time.

Stone: I make excuses avoiding my calls; allowing the plumber to dictate my course. I laugh back at the electrician and say, “Yeah, sure you can – you get what you deserve.” I get snarky with the roofer and hang up on him.

I choose a diamond day!

My blog is giving me a fit and I feel like I’m spinning my wheels.

Diamond: I realize things are in a constant state of progress and am more forgiving of myself.

Stone: I wallow in frustration beating myself up for things not being perfect.

I choose a diamond day!

Bills are to be paid – to be met – to keep.

Diamond: I focus on the days progress, what was accomplished, and keep positive self talk.

Stone: I feel sorry for myself, talk to myself negatively and accomplish nothing.

I choose a diamond day!

Diamond days are good days!  Some days it might be diamond chip and others the Hope diamond – just look for them, they’re there! Oh, there’s lots of stones, but heck just toss them aside and go diamond mining instead!

What day do you choose? A diamond or a stone? Tell me how you turn your day into a diamond day!

“The soul is placed in the body like a rough diamond, and must be polished, or the luster of it will never appear.” -Daniel Defoe

Tell your electrician you can find a cheaper electrician too; so ask him what he is doing to set himself apart from the others? Sometimes when you come back at these guys with an open-ended question at least you might get some dialogue. Make it a game, now is the time for your low risk practicing because you don’t have anything to lose at this point. Throw some crazy statement out there to totally take them out of their mindset.

Yes, it can be a grind at times but your choice to be a diamond will make all the difference in the world. If people think they need thick skin in social, let them try sales for awhile, huh?

Written like a man who knows! Amen Bill! Social is child’s play when it comes to completely putting yourself on the line in sales – I think that’s why the other stuff doesn’t bother me too much. The niche we target is tough and when they’re good, they’re great; and when they’re bad, they’re awful. Happily, I deal with the majority of gems; they give me hope in this nutty world.

You’re a bright sparkly diamond to me Mr. Dorman and I so appreciate you taking time to read and comment! Thank you!! Wishing you a diamond day!

      Much kindness,

      Elena

Love this! I love the analogy between diamonds and stone. We really are all diamonds in the rough, enduring extreme pressure and heat that in the end produces something the stone will never be, was never meant to be.
My husband has been in sales his whole life. It is a rare breed that succeeds as a classy salesman when they have so much negativity to deal with. It is the one who, like you and Bill, sees the fun and opportunity for growth, and the value in the small successes over time that encourage you to keep at it without lowering your standards!
Love you Elena and what you do!

Heck yes we are “all diamonds in the rough” my friend!! Now you would so appreciate the position we talk of here. You’re a special woman being married to a man in sales! ;) If it’s in your blood, you can’t deny it and to do so, is like caging a wild animal. My dad has been in sales all his life, I’ve always drawn to people in sales and am quite frankly rather fascinated by it all. It’s a constant challenge, yet it’s fun because we’re free. Whether in sales or just are day-to-day existence, it’s all how we choose to handle it.

You always, always make me smile Betsy! Thanks so much for taking time to read and comment … it means a lot!

      Wishing you a sparkly day!

      Elena

    Hi Elena,
That’s a clear line down the middle of happy and miserable you draw with this article! Too often we don’t catch ourselves before we see the stone instead of the diamond in there. WAY too often! I have a friend who is in the last stages of her battle with cancer. She’s needing radiation on her eyes and there is fluid gathering in her body. She sees diamonds despite all this. When I look at her, ALL I see in MY life is diamonds. Perspective helps turn my day into a diamond day. Gratitude and acceptance. And determination to manifest what I want despite any evidence to the contrary! Oh, and this helps too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZUi3XShdqA&list=PL62542DAEB9B3BE4A&index=11&feature=plpp_video

      Hello Lori!

So nice for you to stop by – thank you! :) I’m with you here and totally agree with your second sentence. What a blessing your friend is to you and you are to her. It’s amazing how those in some of the most desperate and discouraging circumstances see all the beauty and sparkle; compared to those with so much who see so little. We get so caught up in the unnecessary of life sometimes when it’s all so fleeting and can be gone in an instant. Here’s to the seeing clearly with immense gratitude!!

Very interesting video! You explore so much of what fascinates me Lori! Thanks for sharing!

      Happiness,

Wow, Elena, what a powerful post. It’s so true that our attitude controls our life as much as our actions do, but what a clever way of presenting the concept!

I had a similar experience this morning. I wrote an email to someone that got lost and didn’t send. I was frustrated at first, then realized that I had the opportunity to re-write it and make it better. Instead of being frustrated, I was grateful for the opportunity for a do-over.

Thanks for your gift of diamonds, Elena!

You’re very kind Carolyn and I’m very grateful to and for you!

Great example of turning your beginning into the start of a diamond day! Love it!! Just realizing the gifts that are actually given in moments like this are so, so valuable. We grow and become wise when be breathe and temper our reactions. It’s the whole “respond vs. react” idea. Oh I struggle and am so human about all this; however, I’ve made huge progress and I build upon that … a work in progress. ;)

You made my day Caryolyn – thank so much!

I hope your diamond day gets bigger and better!

      With gratitude,

      Elena

    Hey Elena,

    Love the analogy!

I hope you have more diamond days to look forward to!

It is true how attitude changes the whole thing you are facing. But sometimes, having stone times is all right. Really, you can be a little angry, a little rude and a little selfish ;) But making a diamond out of the worst possible situation is the high road!

Thanks for telling us to be diamond – eyed! :)

Sweet Hajra!! My blog is been haunting me and I just got it fixed enough to make responses properly. So … I’m heading over to the other one you posted on – my apologies. I’m having Jack Steiner blog empathy pains! ;)

Friend, I like the way you think. Yes, yes and yes – I think we can be a little bit of all those things you mention … I think it’s called being human. Stone days keep us grounded and I personally like that and know that I need that; we all need that. It’s about balance and hopefully not succumbing more to the negatives over the positives.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting Hajra! With your unique style, I swear I could pick your voice (which I’ve never heard obviously) out of a crowded room! Love it!!

      Diamond days to you,

      Elena
