Perhaps it’s because I’m part Italian, maybe because I’m a Pisces, or that I was born on the Ides of March? Hmm … whatever the reason, I seem to live life as an exclamation point! It might be obvious to a few by now that I use the exclamation point a lot in my posts. Rereading past emails, I realized that a vast majority of my sentences ended with an exclamation point. Friends and family totally get
this about me and would know instantly if something was wrong, simply by my lack of grammatical flare.
Though some may disagree, to me exclamation points aren’t like writing in all CAPS, which people equate many times to shouting or yelling. I’m very cautious not to do all caps, especially on twitter, but I don’t hold back on the exclamation points. I’ve had some less than complimentary remarks from some bloggers who mock my usage of this wonderful mark! Can you imagine that?! Exclamation points are like my hands in words, which are my props and help me paint my verbal pictures. It certainly doesn’t mean I’m always bubbling with enthusiasm, nor am I the “life of the party”. The exclamation point does however, help express my passion and enthusiasm for a subject and emphasize an opinion or point!
Some people are question marks. They start and end conversations or correspondence with some form of a question and are always have you answering or at least thinking about their questions. I like question marks; I like anything that makes me think and even better question my self. I think question mark people are great! In fact, question marks and exclamations points go well together. Don’t you think?!
Then we have our period people – that’s it. Their worlds don’t get rocked and they get to the point. You never know exactly what makes them tick and they just seem to roll with it. Sometimes I wish I lived a period world. An exclamation point person can mess the world up for a period person if they’re too over-the-top. It’s funny to me because I’m always looking to find what fires them up and leads them on!
When I was having my child I prayed so hard that this child-to-be would have a personality similar to mine because if she didn’t … my, my would we’d have some problems. It’s a joy to share that my happiness is almost identical to me in the personality department … yeah! She is full of highs and lows and has a great capacity to feel and express those feelings. At times, even for me, it’s a lot to harness; this little exclamation point of mine! (At least it’s easy to understand where she’s coming from.) ![]()
So tell me, what are you? Do you stamp it out and make it all yours by being an exclamation mark? Do you ponder every move and moment and challenge the rest of us with a question mark? Or do you just get to the point and are easy-breezy as a period? I’d love to know!
However you are and choose to express yourself is wonderful and fabulous because it is you and that’s your mark at the end of whatever the statement is in your life!! Cheers!!

Hi sweet and wonderful Elena,
I am a witness of how you live your life as an exclamation mark, not because of your use of these (!) but because your passion and love for life can be felt in your amazingly kind, thoughtful, well articulated and beautiful comments you’ve left on my site.
I can attest that the power of an exclamation mark from your good energy is contagious and has made a positive difference in my life. I can imagine that your own little exclamation mark (aka your daughter) is full of life like her mom. What an amazing gift Elena, to be able to pass down your love for life to her and see your awesome self reflected back through the innocence of a child.
Thank you for truly living your life like the title of your post and thank you for being the great, giving and kind person that you are. A big hug to you my friend! -Bernardo

Haha, Elena, this is awesome – this has to be the first post I’ve ever read about an exclamation mark as the topic. Great stuff!! (extra exclamation mark!)
I think I’m more of a semi-colon kinda guy. Definitely not a full stop/period person; perhaps not quite a full-on exclamation mark person; frequently a question mark person; but (as you can see) a definite semi-colon person.
Mind you, better than that damn # squiggle

Well, first Danny, you know how to make someone cry that’s for sure! There’s a very special place for you in this world and beyond I’m confident.
Second, I totally forgot about the precious semi-colon!! OMgosh, how did that get past me?? I love the semi-colon too, geeez! We won’t even bring up commas or colons … now I’m not going to be able to sleep!
Thank you for your extreme (and unexpected) kindness Danny. You’re a definite exclaimation point in my book (and you’ll remain my treasured semi-colon person because I think they’re very rare indeed!)
Be well!

Hi there miss,
Not sure what the kindness was, but whatever it was, you’re more than welcome.
Have a great week – been poking around the blog and just subscribed, look forward to getting more Italian exclamations in my Inbox!

Hi Elena
I saw Danny had tweeted your post so had to come see what was happening over here. I have Italian blood and Irish blood flowing through my Aussie veins so i get the exclamation mark (we don’t call them poinst in Oz lol).
I also have friends who go crazy about my ??!! and my !!! but they don’t comment about my semi-colons. Probably cos they don’t know what they are or where they should be used
How good to meet a fellow !!! who loves ;;; I shall certainly be back Elena. Love your writing style. Just met you but know your personality is shining through. Will be back for more. Thanks for such an enjoyable read.

Hi Elena, I have followed your instructions and come over here, and what a way to introduce your blog! As Danny said, we’ve never seen a post purely about an exclamation point before
You may have noticed in my comments, that I use a lot of smiley-faces. They’ll either be wink faces
or standard smileys
but I make sure I use them in my work and my comments, as the world needs more smileys. It helps it lighten the mood, show that I’m not taking myself too seriously, and invite others to throw in a few smileys too. That way, we can smile together!
See what I did just then? Exclamation point and a smiley! These good vibes are catching
Stu, I loooove the
s!! You’re so right about the world needing more smileys; never, ever can you have too many of those!
You know, you’ve left a lot of smileys and a lot of goodness out there in the blogosphere and talk about “good vibes catching”?! You’re right on! As with these other faboo bloggers, you have your own wonderful way. What a gift that you stopped by … thank you!!
Nope, we’ve never met, but I think you’re great too!
Blue skies and abundant happiness to you my friend!

Thank You Elena for that insightful article. I am a Piscean too and I agree with your outlook in life. I have different flaws in making decisions. They could be considered an exclamation mark, a question mark and a period. This is very enlightening.
Ah, another Piscean … love it!! Then there’s not much I have to explain here or much on this blog at all since you’ll totally “get” it as the Piscean mind works a bit differently.
I think it’s great to be a well-rounded “ending of a sentence”. : For me, I have to work on that a bit.
Thanks so much for sharing here!
Much kindness,
Elena
