To Do DIY or Not?
As a small business owner your time is absolutely precious, now more than ever. With the economy and how things are being done today, companies are scaling back on employees and the funds they put into advertising and marketing. There are many things business owners are trying to do themselves to save time and money. Some are very smart and work very well and so, not so much.
A lot of time we call on small business owners who tell us they are going to a website themselves with a do-it-yourself program or go with website company that allows them to do that. I will also say that we’ve called countless customers back 6 months later and guess what? They still don’t have a website and they are either very frustrated and mad at themselves and the world for wasting time or they thrilled to hear from us. I personally like that latter.
So, here are some facts to seriously consider when thinking about a do-it-yourself website:
- There’s a lot of time involved and in this particular case, time really is money.
- Yes, packages are typically “cheaper”; however they are not always complete and that’s where the dollars start adding up and your frustrations begin.
- Good design runs a lot deeper than making a pretty image
- A professionally developed site can save you many frustrations and missteps that wouldn’t have crossed your mind until you realize something’s missing or not complete or worse, someone tell you.
- If your site does not have a base set of key features, functionality and professionalism, customers will notice and your site will scream “do-it-yourself” and people will equate that many times to perhaps being cheap or unprofessional.
- A professional will know how to structure the site this user and visitor friendly and design the site to make the most of web technology.
Consider.
Take the time to think each of these points over, consult with other business owners who have a website. And remember … you know you must have a website to compete in today’s market; however, you don’t need to take the cheap, frustrating route, nor hand over the deed to your property to get a professional and relevant website for your small business. I think we might be able to help you with that! ![]()

Well stated and certainly makes sense. Just because you can access everything on the internet doesn’t mean you need to ‘do it yourself’, huh?
Good post and good to see you today.

Hello Bill!
The DIY mentality sometimes drives me nutso!! I hold back from laughing sometimes when a speak with a rather smug individual who tells me that they can do just as good a job and will do it themselves for a “whole lot less.” Really?? Typically they are in the trades and it would be like me saying, “Ha, ha I’ll just get some tools and a look up on the internet how to fix the roof leak or a change the alternator in my car, why do I need you?” Ok then … the reality is I probably would have better success changing the alternator by myself (I’ve got connections
).
Now there are those who are capable and do a great job, but it’s definitely the minority, not the majority. I’ve heard horror stories and see the results of many do-it-yourself jobs and they look like just that. My stance at that point is always it’s better to have no website than a poorly put together or jury-rigged one! OK, I could get really passionate about this, so for your sake
I’ll cut it short.
Thanks for your comment Bill! I hope there’s a good meal in your future! Hmm something tasty and memorable! For us, it’s giving a go at homemade apple dumplings! Mmm!
Be safe and have a fabulous weekend!

Hey,
Really, people think they can do everything themselves…I find managing one blog and one day job tough; I would rather have someone do everything else for me….
But yes, if people can figure it all out and be the all professionals they want to be and can juggle it all…who are we to stop them

I’m with you Hajra – I’d like someone to do everything else for me as well! (I have a laundry list that literally includes laundry.)
Some people are amazingly gifted and talented and can truly do it all themselves and my hats off to them … but I bet they’re control freaks and I used to know one … oh yeah, it was me (though I never was amazingly gifted or talented!).
Thanks so much for stopping in Hajra! I hope your weekend is faboo!
Be safe.

Great list of facts, and I agree on all of them. I think it depends on the current situation of the business owner, if he is overwhelmed with the load of work that he has and has money to shell out, why not outsource it? Some who can’t afford outsourcing, and do the work themselves turn to programs that can do automated work, but the quality of their work somehow decreases because computers can only do so much. It’s a tight situation that either way someone is going to lose something. Just have to choose which is more important.
Just a tip for small business owners, never sacrifice quality just to save a little money. It will come back to haunt you.
Oh, I couldn’t agree more with your last two sentences Dr. Doebler! I have seen this time and again and it’s never pretty. I’ve had people laugh at me suggesting our services and have said they can get a “free” website or they can “do it themselves” etc. and it always mystifies me. My business is like a child to me and I wouldn’t compromise them in any way, nor would I with my business. Interesting …
Good points here – thank you so much for taking the time to comment!!
Much kindness sir,
Elena
